The state of Pennsylvania is attempting to help smokers quit by supplying nicotine patches to residents who want to quit.
With the funds that came in from the federal stimulus and tobacco settlement funds, the state is buying the patches and providing them to those that request them. They started the program this month and it is expected to continue through March, or until the state has run out of the supply of nicotine patches.
The kits, which include a 4 week supply of nicotine patches, In order to receive the free patches, smokers must set a quit date and enroll in free counseling sessions. Counseling sessions including a smoking cessation plan often increase a quitter’s chances of success. Setting a quit date frequently encourages smokers to create and follow a smoking cessation plan.
The state has set up a toll free phone number to call to receive the free stop smoking help kits. Pennsylvania residents can call 1-800-784-8669 to receive the kits and get information about scheduling the free counseling sessions.
